In 2009/10 the European Association for the Teaching of Legal Theory (AEETD) launched an initiative to establish a new European Joint Master Course in Legal Theory under the roof of the
European Academy of Legal Theory (EALT). In 2010/11 AEETD and its partner universities have prepared and submitted a project application for the EU's Lifelong Learning Programme (Erasmus Multilateral Projects – Curriculum Development), meant to facilitate the development and implementation of an EALT Legal Theory master programme. The application has been successful and selected for EU funding in summer 2011. The 2-years AMELIE project has been presented to a wider academic public during the IVR World Congress at the University of Frankfurt/Main in August 2011 and is operating since October 1st, 2011. The project work plan foresees one year of preparing the structure, content, and legal framework of the new curriculum, followed by a pilot year of implementation of the EALT master program.
Like this, the course will open its doors in October 2012 and welcomes students from all over the world holding a basic law degree or equivalent. In the academic year 2012/13 the EALT master's course will be hosted at the University of Vienna (fall semester) and at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow (spring semester). For detailed information on the program and the application procedure please visit the
website of the Master Program in Legal Theory at the coordinating University of Vienna.
The number of available places is restricted. Application deadline will be April 15th, 2012 and June 15th, 2012 (late application for open places).
The master program requires a study period of one year (60 ECTS) and successful students will earn the degree Master of Laws (LL.M.) or Master of Legal Studies (MLS) as single or double degrees (depending on the basic degree on which admission to the program is granted and on the study track followed by the individual student). A mobility phase at one of the partner universities after completion of the fall semester at the University of Vienna is compulsory; in addition, the program offers the possibility for a second and third mobility window during the academic year spent in the EALT master. The tuition fee will amount to EUR 6.190,- (excl. costs for housing, living and course books, etc.; according to the Austrian Exchange Service, monthly living and study costs in Vienna amount to approx. EUR 800,-; see:
www.oead.at).
Due to a cooperation agreement between the University of Vienna and the City University of Hong Kong, a selected number of students can also spend the fall semester in Hong Kong; the students then continue the EALT master program at the European host university of the spring semester (in 2012/13: Cracow).
